Modified assumption

I was roaming around the big Chinese mall here in Toronto which will go nameless for the duration of this post. I had just finished my last acupuncture appointment and instead of going straight home I decided to head out to the mall, just for kicks. It’s been such a long time since I had roamed that place that I thought that I’d give it a good run through.

Parking in that place is tough!!! It’s pretty damn popular, and traffic getting in an out of the place is horrendous. I eventually got a spot, but it was at the far far corner of the lot. I wasn’t trying hard to actually get a good place. I was driving the minivan which has an extended cab. I was in no mood to battle with anyone. Walking to the mall though, I spotted 4 or 5 better newly vacated spots. Whatever.

I actually went into the mall with something in mind. I’m perhaps a bit embarassed to mention it, but I went in looking for DDR Max 2 for my PS2. Yeah yeah, I know. Actually, I’m figuring that it must be a good form of exercise, you know? Plus, if I had a copy I’d be able to battle it out in the arcades with my friends without looking like a total fool. Apparently it happens frequently.

I stopped by the first store I saw that sold video games. I inquired about it and they said they had it. I asked about the region encoding and the guy insisted that it shouldn’t matter. He said that all that mattered was the version–US or Japanese. That’s when things sort of clicked. He shortly mentioned that the game should work on any modified machine. I told him that my machine wasn’t modded at which point he said the game wouldn’t work. Apparently the game wasn’t an original.

That’s interesting, you know? He automatically assumed that my machine was modded–and he was selling me a copy. A lot of the stores in that mall were the same way. I eventually just left disappointed. I haven’t owned my PS2 for longer than a year yet, so I’m unwilling to mod it. On top of that, I’m not sure I want to spend $100 just for that. Ah well…that just means no dancing pad jumping for me just yet. Maybe one day I’ll find a legit place. Meanwhile, I’m consigned to DDR mediocrity.
