Hunter’s Moon

I got a call from a classmate at about 9 am yesterday morning. He was asking whether I wanted ot head to the school to study for an exam we owuld have later that day. I agreed because the previous day’s round of studying was spiked with several hours of nap time at various intervals, making my time spent at home a bit less effective than it could have been. A group of us ended up in the library staring at our textbooks for most of the day. A lot of this time was spent in despair only because the material was so arcane that our prospects for a good mark dropped like an exponential function exp(-at)*u(t).

Oh fuck, I must be shot.

I do believe I was the most giggly out of the group…and it was having an effect on the rest. Ah, whatever. We were all going to do poorly anyway. As much as I reread a particular section of the reading material, it just wasn’t clicking for me. I wasn’t absorbing it. I wasn’t comprehending it. It just wasn’t sinking in. Damn you, Hilbert and your bloody functions! Damn you, Single Side Band! You bring wonderful things like media signals over the airwaves, but why must you be so difficult??? I ended up giving up totally and decided to just memorize questions from previous exams.

Oh, and that paid off. The first question on the exam was a replica of one that I studied meticulously from a previous exam, just with different numbers. So, hey, if anything I was able to get at least a quarter of the marks on the exam. When you’re living in mediocrity, you have to take what you can get.
As soon as the exam finished, I had to run off to another building for my Sociology class. We studied were continuing our talk on deviance. Everyone’s a deviant. Some people take pride in being deviant. It’s an amsuing talk. It’s making me think that I might want to take a class on criminology next term when I have hell of a lot for electives. And when I say “hell of a lot”, I really mean 1 more. Listen, 2 free electives is a freaking luxury in Engineering.

I left class at about 9:30 pm and headed off to the plaza for some food and decided on Phat Cat. I tell you, Phat Cat has *the best* fish and chips in all of KW. Seriously. The slab of fish that they give is gigantic. As well, the guy is really generous with his fries. It’s awesome. Anyway, on the way there I took a look up at the moon and realized that the lunar eclipse was well underway. I was witness to a very strange phenomenon. I’m not necessarily talking about the eclipse of the moon, although, that was really fun to watch too. As I walked home, I spotted numerous groups of students just standing outside gazing at the night sky. For this one night, students turned into astronomers as they explained the whole eclipse phenomenon. Some used their bodies and the bodies of their friends to explain. Some just twirled their fingers while trying to make their point. Other groups just found it a good time to be socializing with people out in the open. I swear, I smelled people smoking up at various locations. There were people yelling to others who seemed to be leaving the groups, “You can’t leave now! It’s almost done!” Some people were trying to take pictures, although, I’m not sure pictures would turn out. Ultimately, I found it more interesting to watch the people instead of the moon.

Actually, walking home, the moon was largely at my back. I found myself turning around every now and then though to see its progress. I saw a few shooting stars as well. The night sky was great to watch, although I really had to watch where I was walking. I walked into and tripped over several curbs last night. I don’t think anyone was watching me anyway.

Last night was good. Very good. Now, I must get back to studying for another exam…but not before I shower and get some food into me.

Basement Memories

There’s more fallout from the storm I mentioned on Sunday.

Saturday night, when I came home, I could hear the sounds of dripping water hitting metal. The faint sounds were coming from my closet. Naturally, I feared the worst. I swung the door wide open, and started feeling around the walls for any signs of moisture. Oddly enough, I didn’t find anything out of the ordinary. Thing is, if I pressed my ear against the metal frame of the closet door I could hear distinct drops coming from somewhere. I really had no idea how to adress the problem, so I just left it at that and paid no more attention to it.

The next morning, I opened my closet and found that a shirt that was lying half out of the laundry basket and half on the floor was half soaked. It smelled of rain water that had passed thorugh some thing not meant to filter water. Again, I felt around the walls and found no cracks or leaks. The carpet however was fully damp.

As the hours passed, the smell of mold and dampness started getting stronger. Honestly is reeked of my old basement in Brampton. The smell even got to the point where I started gagging. I would have reported it to the main residence office, but they were closed by the time I was at my puking point. I cleared everything out of my closet and went down to the living room fully planning on camping out downstairs. That *was* the plan, until I found that I couldn’t find any comfortable positions using the chairs. So, I consigned myself to dealing with the odd odor all night. I left my window wide open despite that fact it was 10° outside.

This morning I went to the residence office ot report everything. They sent someone over to my room. He couldn’t find anything wrong with the walls, so he said that he would check the roof for anything out of the ordinary. Honestly, I don’t know what his results were, but I guess I’ll find out the next time there’s a rain storm–which seems to be this week. If my room ends up smelling of ass again, I will bitch and holler fully until something is done.

Polar Bear Chow

CNEWS – Canada: Kids in Churchill, Mba., urged to not dress like polar bear chow on Halloween

I’m sure a lot of kids are disappointed.

Moist

Last night it was looking like I was going to face yet another night of solitude. I was very much consigned to studying for midterms. However, like a gift from the other plane I was suddenly messaged by an acquaintance/friend whom I haven’t seen in a while. He asked if I wanted to go to have a drink or two. Man, I was elated to be given the opportunity to escape from my quiet hollow.

Naturally, I accepted.

I checked the weather report and it called for rain overnight. I was contemplating bringing my umbrella, but I really didn’t want to have to keep it in mind and carry it around. In the end, I merrily left for the pub. The sky was overcast, but there really wasn’t any sign of activity overhead on that breezy night.

I met with my friend in front of the pub and we proceeded to drink, eat, and share stories. It was great. It kind of makes me realize that I need some better stories, myself. As time passed though, we noticed that the rain started coming down. At first it was a light shower, but it progressed to full rain pretty quickly.

So, here I was walking home getting quite wet. Oh hell, I didn’t care. On the way home there were many opportunities to walk an indoor route. I opted to keep walking outside anyway. It didn’t matter. Frankly, I felt drier than I should have felt. I felt the top of my head, and my hair wasn’t soaked. My jeans didn’t feel like they were getting damp. I felt just fine.

Oh, but as soon as I stepped inside the house, I realized that I was terribly wrong. Towels are a wonderful invention, aren’t they? Despite getting soaked, I wasn’t shivering. I felt alright.

I tell you, I’m as strong as an ox.

Showcase is running a particularly funny ad campaign at the moment. On their front page are three different clips of those commercials. Have a look at them all. It makes me want to do something outside of my sphere of comfort.

Saluting boundary pushers everywhere.

Go, go, SIM!

Yup. I’m still in the lab. It’s the price I pay for blowing off yesterday. The day before, I decided not to come in to the lab and really just slacked the day away. Do I regret it? Hell no.

After working several full days on something worth only 3% of my final mark of the course, I needed and wanted a break. My mind needed rest, so that’s what I gave it.

Screw it all.

Right now, actually, I’m just killing time. My sociology class starts at 7. I’ve been debating whether I should go to that class, especially since I have a midterm tomorrow. In the end, I figured that this is the one class that I asked to have on my schedule, so I better damn well go, right?

I say I’m killing time because my lab partner and I “gave up” on our lab. We got our VHDL code to be trim, efficient, and speedy. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get it to pass all the simulation tests that were provided to us. Being that we spent a good 5 days working on the code, we figured that for 3% of our final mark the effort was truly not worth it.

Damn straight, too. Midterms are worth 8x as much in this course.

Ugh, anyway, enough procrastinating. Off to class.

Occupado

I’ve been in the lab from early morning to late night for the past few days. I’m really sick and tired of this lab, and I just might give up sometime soon. Meanwhile, I’ve got midterms to study for. It hasn’t really sunk in yet just how busy I’m going to be over the next little while. November is going to be hellish with 2 projects, a presentation, 4 labs all crammed into a 30 day month. I’m ready to face it all.

I think.

I suppose I have no choice.

I’m not in a panic yet. I’m not sure I ever will be. If I stay at my current level of sanity, I’ll be just fine.

Only happy when it rains

Wow. It’s really raining down hard here. I’m quite happy with it, actualy. It’s been so long since we’ve had a good rainfall. That was evident from all the sidewalk chalk art that was created around frosh week that was still visible up until a day or two ago. The weather forecast seems to be predicting rain for most of the upcoming week.

I don’t mind getting wet all that much. Then again, I’ve been indoors for most of the day. I’ve been in the computer labs at the school since 9:30 this morning. I’m sure I’l be here until mid-evening. I’m working with my lab partner on a VHDL project. It took us so long to just get it off the ground, but now that we’re moving, things are going nicely. Franky, it’s better being here than at home sitting around. I’m sure I would have slept anyway (just to block the poinsonous environment out).
