I’ve really got no clue

On the way home from work yesterday, I was mulling over how much I disliked the current work that I was doing. Currently, I’m being asked to write a testbench for something that has no documentation. No one has in-depth knowledge of how it works. I’m not familiar with the all-purpose testbench the company has, and yet I’m expected to work with it to investigate how the component functions. When I’m done that, I have to write a block-level testbench to test it.

Now, I’m capable of working on it to an extent, however, it really bothers me that I feel totally inept with those other aspects. There are times when I’d be staring at my computer screen for hours on end, trying to figure out what to change in order to get things to work. Then, the full-timer that gives me work comes by, looks at the thing, changes a setting and manages to get it all to work. Most of the time:
1. I wouldn’t have known about the setting.
2. If I did know, I wouldn’t have known where to find it (because if I did, it wouldn’t be an issue)

In the end, I just feel like a total moron.

Oh, but that’s probably just because I’m letting the full-timer get to me. He’d let in comments now and then like, “Oh, it’s your second term in this department and you still don’t know?” Or, “Do I still need to help you out?” Or, my favourite, “Other co-ops have been able to figure it out on their own.” There’s also, “You just need to spend more time looking at it.” Well, damn, I’ve been looking at it for a long time, and nothing’s happening.

I’m almost waiting for him to pull out “And we hired you again because….why again?” If he does, I might as well go crazy.
