I was walking to the bus stop earlier this morning. My mind was focused on the music coming out of my iPod. I really had no reason to pay attention to the sidewalk, which was a bad error in judgment on my part. As I turned the corner I stepped on a patch of ice and collapsed like a fool. A few people were out walking on the other side of the road and saw the incident. I got up, brushed off bits of dirt, and proceeded to act like nothing big happened. That’s all I could have done, I guess. As I brushed off the dirt, I noticed that my left hand had quite a few scratches on it. It was also starting to bleed. Now, I wasn’t about to go back home just to wash my hands and put some ointment on it. The bus was about to come at any minute. So, I just stuck my hand in my pocket hoping for it all to clot quickly. The whole way over to work, I was conscious of keeping my bleeding hand out of sight. God knows how some people may react. Whatever.
It’s hard not to look silly in such a situation. Imagine a big guy like me slipping and collapsing in a pile of leather and khakis. I don’t think anyone cared anyway. People just went on with their own business.
The weather had been reasonably warm over the past few days. A lot of the snow had melted making the sidewalks wet. Today has been the first day in a while with below freezing temperatures. I should have paid attention.
