Fully rejected

It’s now official. All of my job applications have been rejected. Mind you, I had only applied to four jobs…but…still.

I feel quite inadequate now. It’s alright though, because another round of job postings is coming closer to the end of the month. Hopefully I’ll be able to snag something great then.

I know I have awesome credentials. There are absolutely great things on my resume. Something though…I’m not sure what…is wrong. I’ll have to work it out.

Meanwhile, I’m off to sulk.

Keep on workin’ till we’re dead

Over the past weekend, we were continually working on this one programming assignment that was due yesterday. We spent every single day working on it. On Monday, we stayed in the labs overnight to continue typing away. By 4 am, we were all going a bit loopy. However, at that point, we weren’t even close to a finished product. At 4:20 pm, 10 minutes before the deadline, we were scrambling to get all our code together. Didn’t fail though, we found some last minute bugs. So, we decided to just take a -10% penalty and hand it in a day later. The bug was finally solved at about 6 pm, at which point the three of us basically said, “man, I’m not working on this tomorrrow”. So, we handed in our half-assed code.

Quite glad to have finished it though. The project was holding me hostage for too long. I have to work on my part of our fourth year design project today. I have to learn OpenGL by the end of today? How hard could that be?
I’m being facetious.

For next week, I knew we had two midterms. I was wrong. We have three.

I’m not going home this weekend.

I hate this school.

No more lawnmower noises

Since I built my new computer system, I’ve slowly grown accustomed to the loud whirring of the fans. At one point, I was quite capable of sleeping through the noise. However, in the past few months, the damn things started sounding like a lawnmower on occasion. It was the sound of something struggling. On many occasions, I’d give a small kick to the case in the hopes that it would quiet down. Sometimes it would, sometimes it just made more noise. I’ve opened the case, trying to listen around for the source of the noise. I remember making the conclusion that it was coming from the CPU fan. Yes, that was it. Reluctant though to replace the fan, I just left it alone.

Sometime within the past week, I turned on my computer in the morning to do some work. It was quieter than usual. I don’t think I even noticed though. I mean, it’s been so unpredictable in the past, so I just assumed it was in another one of its moods. About half an hour later, I started smelling something like melting plastic, or heated paint. I assumed it was one of my roommates doing something strange. Once again, I paid no attention. Shortly after, my computer started beeping loudly as if something was horribly wrong. I had no idea what was going on, so I just switched it off immediately.

Well, I was freaking out. I called Keith’s place several times to see if he knew what was going on, but I got no answer. So, I investigated on my own. I quickly noticed that the top of the case was a lot warmer than usual. Soon, it all made sense. The power supply was misbehaving. I switched my computer on again to investigate. When I did, the power supply fan wasn’t moving at all. That’s not good at all. I mean, that’s what keeps it cool (and in turn heats my room with hot air). I stuck a pen in there to nudge the fan. When I did, it started turning again.

Whatever.

Over the next few days, the fan stopped running two more times. Each time I had to nudge the thing again to get it going. I eventually got fed up and figured that I needed a new power supply altogether.

I ended up getting a dual fan 450W supply (my crappy one was 300W). Let me tell you, my computer has never been so quiet. Sometimes, when I walk in the room, I have to check whether the computer is actually on or not. It’s insane.

No more lawnmower noises. You don’t have to put up with that. Now I know.

And if you complain once more

Just got Björk’s new CD. On her website, she requested people to send in remixes of her song “Army of Me”. I think she got several hundred submissions or so. She brought the list down to 20 mixes of different styles and put them on a CD. Proceeds from the CD go to help Unicef and, I guess, victims of the tsunami.

There are some really impressive tracks on there. Thing is, I think most of them happen on the first half of the CD. Either that, or I just wasn’t paying attention by then. I guess I’m treating this as a novelty CD: fun to listen to now and then, but not getting too much spin time.
