Sunfire

It’s now a done deal. I have a vehicle. Only thing is, I won’t have insurance until November, so the car is sitting in the dealer’s warehouse until then.

It’s a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire. Beige colour, and looking quite nice. I say, the look fits me. Despite it being used, I wouldn’t be ashamed driving that thing around. Just need to get used to the relatively low floor. I’m used to driving around in a minivan and having a view that’s above most others. This will be a big difference.

I wish I had a camera on me when we saw the car. One day though, I will post pictures.

I think I may need a bathroom break

Oh, even presidents need bathroom breaks. I was browsing BBC News when I spotted this article. At the UN world summit, amidst discussion, President Bush suddenly had an urge to go and quickly scrawled a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Unfortunately for him, a Reuters photographer managed to get a quick snap of the note.

“I think I may need a bathroom break? Is this possible?”

It goes to show the obvious: that he is only human.

Missed the bus

Weekend was kind of a bust. My mom, my aunt, and I were planning on heading over to Casino Rama. We got some tickets with a church group, which I find pretty amusing. It’s like leading a bunch of the pious over to the sinning trough.

We were expecting to go in the evening and stay for a few hours. On the day of, I went to pick up my aunt from the bus station. We were both looking forward to heading to the slot machines. I wasn’t feeling brave enough to head to the big tables for things like Blackjack. I mean, I only planned to bring $100. That won’t last several hours on those tables. Heaven knows I wasn’t gonna suddenly get lucky.

Ah, well, all the intentions were good, but when we came home, my mom told us that we had missed the event. We made a mistake. As it turns out, the bus left early in the morning and not in the evening. We weren’t even close to catching it. Too bad. I suppose though the money I saved can definitely go towards something like a new router. Lord, that sounds way too practical.

The Future is Friendly

No kidding, eh?

That’s TELUS mobility’s motto. I swear, I’ve never been in a place this friendly. The people there are really great. I feel at ease. The cynic in me though is asking “well, gee, how long will this feeling last?” Seriously.

In my first week, I’ve received so much swag. It’s quite amazing. I’ve received a calendar, mugs, TELUS post-its with those cute bunnies, a backpack, a t-shirt, a mousepad, a pen, and one of those stuffed TELUS lizards (yes! one of those! the red one!). Christ, I’m gushing. But seriously, I almost feel like they’re happy to have me. I haven’t had that feeling since…ever. In past co-op terms, I’ve always felt like an outsider, or perhaps someone that was just…”there”. This time, I dunno, I’m suddenly feeling quite motivated to contribute properly. They know what they’re doing. Perhaps I should really consider trying to get a job there after graduation.

Yikes, I’ve been brainwashed!

Pistachios and beer

It’s Labour Day. I spend a good chunk of today over at a neighbour’s place trying to fix their computer. They originally had Windows 98 on there, and for whatever reason Explorer (the main OS core) gave up right at the beginning of every boot.

No, that’s not a good thing at all.

So, I spent a good few hours installing WIndows XP Pro and various other protective things like a firewall and antivirus. It brings back memories of when I was working in IT. It was excruciatingly boring doing it back then, but this time it wasn’t so bad. The neighbours fed me, and later gave me anchovies, pistachios and beer. Hey, can’t go wrong.

They’re really helpful to us. Whenever there’s some home improvement project that my father has, the neighbour comes over to help. It’s great. So, I figured that helping them out would be the least I could do. Our families are always inviting each other over whenever there are parties or what not. We’re all on good terms.

Anyway, perhaps as another thank you for helping out with the computer, they sent over some barbecued skewered meat. It’s pretty good to know that there are people out there watching out for us.

CN Anime Expo 2005

It’s surprising that I’ve managed to neglect blogging about the CN Anime Expo which happened last weekend. I sudeenly feel that now’s the right time to do so.

I went to the CN Anime Expo on Friday. This was my first BIG anime con. The lineup was ricidulously long. I was shocked to see the multitude of people attending. This was Friday alone. The line up to get into the Dealer Area was ridiculous. It stretched out of the Convention Centre, upstairs, downstairs, to the end of the street, looping back around so that the end of the line was back by the Convention Centre. To be fair, there were 4 other conventions grouped together with the anime con. It was like a geek’s wet dream, let me tell you.

Actually, to tell the truth, the only reason I went to the con was to meet people from the Genvid forums. Thought it would be interesting to see what these people were like in real life. On Friday, I was wandering around looking for them. Not knowing what they looked like, I was just ambling, looking for something familiar like the Genvis t-shirt or something. Alas, nothing. In the end, I just ended up purchasing a lot of merchandise.

On the Saturday, I got a call with them informing me where they would be. Sure enough, I saw them in line waiting to get in the Voice Acting 101 seminar with Roland Parliament. Roland played the voice of Melvin in the NA dub of Sailor Moon. Cool stuff. After the event, we went to an atuograph session with for SM voice stars. Attending were Roland and Kristen Bishop, who played several villains in the show. I bought a poster to get it signed by them.

After, I went for a meal with Jay (owner of Genvid) and my friend Anne. Jay was amused by the fact that he was in Canada, eating at a place called Lonestar Grill. The socialization was great. Like I said, that was the main reason I was there.

Anne and I took in a showing of a homemade Star Trek episode. We were expecting some sort of ghetto show, but it wasn’t so bad. The actors seemed a tad out of place, but overall for a home project it was pretty good. Hell, I’m not even a Trekkie.

In the end, I ended up with a lot of swag. I purchased too much.
Menchi stuffed animal (Excel Saga)
Excel Saga manga vols 1-5
Sailor Mars figurine
Dear My Friend CD (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon)
Fithos Lusec Vecos Winosec CD (Final Fantasy VIII)
Trigun Poster
Sailor Moon poster
Puni Puni Poemi DVD

On the Sunday, I headed back to the Convention Centre to meet with Genvidders for a final meal before we parted ways. I didn’t want to go to the con anymore. I had my fill. We ate at Jack Astor’s and talked about all things Sailor Moon. Awesome stuff to know people whom I could talk with about the subject. That’s very rare.

That’s what happened last weekend. It was very exhausting, but the people made it all worth it.

Telecom incest

Today was my first day of work over at Telus. It was sort of uneventful. I arrived in reception on time to find several students already there waiting. They were oddly silent. It took me a few moments to get their names, programs and introduce myself properly, and get them talking.

Because that’s just the type of person I am.

Anyway. I spoke with my department manager for a good long while. He commented on how the whole telecom industry was quite “incestuous”, meaning that after a while, anyone you’ll meet in any telecommunications company will be someone you’ve probably met at another company at some point in the past. I laughed out loud at the ridiculousness of the word “incestuous”.
