Triple seven

So, on the weekend was 07/07/07 on the Gregorian Calendar. A whole load of people were going wedding crazy over this date. Do you really think it’s that lucky? About the same amount of those marriages will end in divorce, don’t you think? Frankly, I think next year’s 08/08/08 will be even crazier. Eight is supposed to be a lucky number in Chinese culture because it’s a homophone for “prosperity.” I’ve just confirmed this with Cindy. :)

Anyway, July 7 was also the date for the whole Live Earth thing that was going on. Maybe it makes me a bad global citizen, but I couldn’t bring myself to care about the concert. OK…so I say that it doesn’t make me a bad citizen, but I have to wonder, why was I so apathetic? I was flipping channels, and spotted coverage on no less than 5 channels.

(As an aside, the coverage here in Toronto kind of drove home the fact that CTV Globemedia acquired CHUM. They made full use of the fact that they had all those extra channels. It felt so odd seeing the CTV logo appear on MUCH. Crazy!)

Even though it was on so many channels, there was nothing that seemed to grab me and make me want to spend my time watching those celebrities perform. I realize that they were attempting to spread a message, but, in the end, will it really make a difference? Sure, every little bit helps, I guess. Still…

Anyway, for me, personally, I’m not sure how much I really would have gained by watching. I don’t think I would have been any more likely to donate any money to whatever cause they had lined up. I don’t have that level of disposable income, you know? Prior to this, I’ve been trying to push those fluorescent bulbs on my parents. I think they’re in about 30% of the sockets in our house. I’m the one encouraging the family to recycle and compost and such. I’m doing what I can in little ways. Honestly, I think that if the message can be brought down to “our” level, it would be so much more effective. Celebrities talking down to me from on high doesn’t have the same effect. I dunno. Lots to think about.
