My mother is currently working the night shift at the hospital. As a result, she’s been having to spend her time catching up on lost sleep. She asked me to cook dinner tonight because she was feeling tired. I agreed, and settled on making a pot of chili for the family.
(For those who’ve lived with me: chili –> beans –> oh dear –> yes)
I was kind of struck by how simple it is to make chili. It reminded me a lot of my special spaghetti sauce, except less-saucy, with more chunks of stuff, and a whole lot of cumin. Why hadn’t I learnt how to do this earlier? Knowing how might have saved me from some bad meals at university.
This is the first meal that I’ve cooked in a long while. Let me tell you, I kind of miss cooking. Since I’ve moved back home, I just haven’t had to worry about cooking for others all that much. There’s this sense of satisfaction that you get when you know that the people you are serving are really enjoying the food. It gives me great joy. I figure that I’d cook more often here at home, but I usually get back home from work really late. As well, I’m unable to really plan meals effectively because I’m not the one buying the groceries, know what I mean? Those are all excuses, really…but they’re good excuses.
I guess I can look forward to cooking more again once I’ve moved into my new condo (15 months to go…will blog about that soon). I want to make sure that the kitchen in my new place is really fantastic because I know that a hell of a lot of good things will be coming out of there.
(As long as I find the time)
