Retiring the shirt

I have this chocolate brown short-sleeve collared shirt that I’ve enjoyed wearing for a while now, but I think it’s now time to retire it. Over time, I’ve noticed two other people at work that started wearing a similar shirt. They’re not exactly the same, but sufficiently close enough to kind of make me feel a little awkward. One of these people is in my department. The other is on a different floor, so I don’t usually run into him.

In the past, I’ve timed wearing my shirt such that the likelihood of us wearing the same thing was cut down. Today though I was running low on options so I used the shirt. When I came in, I noticed my colleague wearing the shirt as well. Crap. Well, one out of two isn’t bad, I guess. However, when I was in the kitchen getting coffee, I spotted the other guy wearing the shirt. All three of us were wearing the same damn thing. Ugh.

OK, so I need to find time to go clothes shopping. I haven’t done that in a while. It’ll be good to refresh the closet, you know?

Running log: 2007/08/15

Nearing the end of my run, I started feeling falling drops on my arms. I looked up expecting to find rain clouds. I found none. Of course, as it turns out, I was really feeling drops of sweat that were running off of the hat I was wearing. I don’t know why I’m finding that as funny as I do.

The hat was a free mesh hat I got at this year’s 20 minute challenge at the RR. It’s supposed to be good at letting generated heat escape. That’s not why I find the hat useful though. In my case, I find that it soaks up a lot of the sweat generated up at my scalp and helps it to evaporate. Without the hat, it would mostly end up on my shirt, but only after dripping all over my face which isn’t all that pleasant.

So, I’ve got another 5K race coming up! I know! So soon. Like I mentioned before, it’s at the Toronto Islands. Should be great. I’m hoping for cool weather right by the waterfront. As for a target goal, worst case scenario, I’m looking to get a time around my last race, give or take a minute. That time was pretty slow, so the goal should be attainable. Truthfully though, of course it would be fantastic if I shaved time off. Who wouldn’t want to be faster, you know? Unless I crap out like the last run, prospects are good for an improved time. That means…no sushi buffet the day before! Hahah. It’s still early, but I’m not freaking out like last time. I kind of know what to expect. Still, you can never predict what weird things your body will do on the day of. All I can do is hope for the best…and maybe think about the next race!

“Chance now to climb higher”

Scorpio (Oct. 24 — Nov. 22)

At a time when more good things than ever are rising, you better have a good reason for letting something come down or stay down. No matter how things seem, there’s a chance now to climb higher. Allow yourself the luxury of feeling fantastic.

Idle time

Euh…

We’re currently in the last stages of a release here at work. I’m not really involved with that work right now, so I’m a little bit idle. I’ve been that way for the past few workdays. This morning I was struggling to roll out of bed, if only because I hate idle time–I tend to get all fidgety and nervous during these periods.

(ETA: Read somewhere that people with Mars in Virgo tend to be like this when idle. Just saying, is all.)

There’s a behemoth project on the horizon. I can see it right in front of me. I’m sort of anxious to get started on it, just to have something to do. Of course, once I’ve started working on it, maybe I’ll change my tune and wish for a break. Then again, this idle time right now isn’t really a break at all. I’m still trapped at my workstation. It’s not like I can just leave and do some errands all day–I need to be here to get paid, yeah?

Blah.

Three column layout

So, if you’ve been here before, you’ll have noticed that this blog now has three columns instead of the two from before. I just thought that the sidebar was getting a little unwieldy. So, I turned on the three column option with this theme. I managed to get things a little bit balanced, and now, I’m growing to like the look more and more. Maybe the centre content column is a little long though. It’s currently showing 14 entires, but maybe I should chop it down to 8 or so. I’ll try that out sometime soon.

I’ve also brought back the random avatars that I had back when I was using GM. I’m currently posting two, but I’m thinking of changing it back to one and having the size be 100×100. We’ll see.

So alright, if you’re poking around and you see something really structurally weird, please let me know. Thanks!

Lightbox plugin

Ooh, just added a nifty plugin to my install of WordPress. The Lightbox JS plugin makes images pop up in this cool JavaScript based overlay. I’ll try to use it for any posted images from this point forward.

So yeah, might as well post some new images to try it out. It’s a good reason to upload some downtown pics I took with my cellphone last spring.

Joy from a pot of chili

My mother is currently working the night shift at the hospital. As a result, she’s been having to spend her time catching up on lost sleep. She asked me to cook dinner tonight because she was feeling tired. I agreed, and settled on making a pot of chili for the family.

(For those who’ve lived with me: chili –> beans –> oh dear –> yes)

I was kind of struck by how simple it is to make chili. It reminded me a lot of my special spaghetti sauce, except less-saucy, with more chunks of stuff, and a whole lot of cumin. Why hadn’t I learnt how to do this earlier? Knowing how might have saved me from some bad meals at university.

This is the first meal that I’ve cooked in a long while. Let me tell you, I kind of miss cooking. Since I’ve moved back home, I just haven’t had to worry about cooking for others all that much. There’s this sense of satisfaction that you get when you know that the people you are serving are really enjoying the food. It gives me great joy. I figure that I’d cook more often here at home, but I usually get back home from work really late. As well, I’m unable to really plan meals effectively because I’m not the one buying the groceries, know what I mean? Those are all excuses, really…but they’re good excuses.

I guess I can look forward to cooking more again once I’ve moved into my new condo (15 months to go…will blog about that soon). I want to make sure that the kitchen in my new place is really fantastic because I know that a hell of a lot of good things will be coming out of there. :)

(As long as I find the time)

Seating for pastries

On a crowded train, an empty seat is not the place to put your breakfast pastry. I don’t care if you’re holding a newspaper and coffee.

That’s just not right.
