Breaking in the sneakers

At the beginning of the month I spoke about having to buy new shoes because the heels on my old ones were quite compressed and were no longer giving me the correct amount of support. That’s why my mid-soles were aching. Well, I’ve uploaded some pics to give an idea of what the heels looked like. Please pardon the quality: they were taken with my cellphone.

The picture on the left is of my older pair of shoes. In the blue box that I marked the picture with, you’ll notice a big crease. It doesn’t look too bad in this picture because I hadn’t worn the shoes for a few days at the time when I took the picture, so the material had decompressed a little bit. However, when I wear the shoes, the problem looks a lot more pronounced. The part below the crease bulges out a little bit. Compare that to the new shoes on the right. The heel still looks sturdy and shoes no signs of wear.

I’ve taken the new shoes out 3 times. The first two times were rough. The shoes felt entirely stiff and almost reminded me of when I as trying to run with the Beasts that I were trying to break in when I started running. I wasn’t quaking with pain like I was back then, but there definitely was discomfort. There were brief moments though where things were feeling alright. I was really debating whether to give up on the shoes and go back to the 767′s that I knew would be totally fine. On Sunday, I went through another shoe-fitting session with one of the RR clerks. By the end, once again, I found out that I was best off with New Balance shoes. So, I decided that I would just suck it up and allow my feet to adjust. Because of those periods where I was relatively pain-free, I figured that the shoes just needed to adjust to my orthotics and gait. On Wednesday’s run, I was surprised at how I was having an easier go with the shoes. The shoes were still a bit stiff, but it was a lot more tolerable. I think I’m comfortable enough to not have to worry about my shoes all that much anymore until the end of the year when I’ll undoubtedly have to change sneakers again.
