Lament of the non-sporty

It seems that just about everyone at work is in full Euro 2008 mode. So many conversations that are floating around right now surround matches that were, or are coming up soon. On my team there’s a Turkish guy, and he’s particularly interested in this afternoon’s match–and with good reason, of course.

All of this just makes me think of how this is such a tough time for someone how isn’t quite so sports minded such as myself. I’m unable to join in on these conversations. In fact, listening in I’m quite paralyzed because I just have no idea how to comment one way or another. It’s kind of sad, however, I don’t really think I’m going to take up a new interest just for the sake of some minor socialization, right? It’s not in my personality type–I’m quite fixed! I’ll be content enough to keep quiet and bide my time until the tourney is over. Still…damn it all!

Umm…go Turkey?

NOOOOOO!!!!!! Boo on the CZ loss on a goal that was offsides. I got to suffer that whilst standing in the middle of Old Town Square with 6000 dejected Czech fans. That was less fun. Poor Petr Cech. He’s just had a rough season from start to finish. The skull fracture, the hand injury, the Carling Cup loss to Spurs (wooo!!!) in overtime, losing the Premiership in the last game, losing the Champions League Final when it had been so close he could probably taste it and now this…I don’t blame him for being happy the season is over!

Also, I have no idea why your Turkish friend was interested in the matches yesterday. They were going to play Croatia no matter what happened between Italy and France.

Here are a few things you’ll want to say: A propos of the impending Spain/Italy matchup — Spain is a good young team if their defence decides to show up for all 90 minutes. With Casillas in goal and Torres (brilliant) and Villa (who has four goals in two games) up front, they’re looking good against an aging Italian team that only managed to advance because they had to play their guts out against France facing early elimination after drawing against Romania.

A propos the Dutch team — they’re consistently good, but consistently overlooked. While van Persie and van Nistelrooy are both stars in their own right and doing a lot to support the team on this crazy rampage they’re on, the Dutch team on the whole is playing incredibly sharp football.

Germany, while the odds on favourite to win the whole thing at the outset of the Tournament only managed a 1-0 win over Austria AND they were shocked by that 2-0 (two – nil, not two – nothing or two – zero) loss to Croatia, so if the key players in Podolski, Ballack and Klose can remain strong in the face of their quarterfinal matchup with Portugal, they still have a chance to pull it out. *On a personal note, I hope this happens because I fucking hate Cristiano Ronaldo, that sneaky little fuck. But don’t discount Portugal because they’ve been strong, even without some crazy good football from Ronaldo, who has been limited to one goal.

    I hope that helps!

Yeah, I thought the Turkey-Croatia match was the other day. I was quite wrong.

Anywho, thanks for the talking points. They might come in handy, yet. :)
