Hey, so remember that thing where if you clean your place a little bit each day you won’t end up being overwhelmed by having to clean everything all at once? Yeah, that didn’t happen. And now on my designated cleaning day I’m overwhelmed. I did make a bit of progress, but aesthetically I don’t feel like I even made a dent. Damn. I guess there’s tomorrow, but…maaaaaaan.

I don’t mean any thing bad by this but I never understood how ‘cleaning a little bit along the way’ doesn’t happen. For someone like me, cleaning a little bit is something that I ‘just do’ that I can’t understand how it’s such an effort to just wash a plate and a knife after you’ve had a peanut butter sandwich, or a spoon after you’ve had yoghurt -or even if you’ve had to use a frying pan to make some eggs. Is there an explanation for it? Probably not.. the same way I don’t think there is an explanation for how it’s so ‘easy’ for me. Good luck J!

There are a couple of things at play here. Back when I was living with people I was really good with cleaning my things when I was done with them. I didn’t want to leave stuff in the way of other people. That was just a matter of respect. Now that I’m on my own, I’ve allowed myself a bit of leeway in that I don’t fret if things aren’t totally in order. That being said, I’m generally good when it comes to food related items like pans, plates, and utensils. That’s because food-related stuff can easily go bad if left alone. My problems lie elsewhere.
For example, after picking up the mail I might leave a bill on a table. I mean, there’s no rush to pay that off right away, right? Next thing you know, a flyer and a magazine join that bill. Then receipts and small bits of random things get left behind. All of a sudden, by week end there’s a pile of stuff there that needs to get sorted out.
Or, perhaps, after folding most laundry away there just happens to be a pile of unmatched socks. I might set those aside knowing that I could hunt for the other halves. I’d suddenly get distracted, and the socks would just sit there in the basket for a week.
I know a lot of people have great habits and are really on top of having everything in order all of the time. I’m just not one of those people. Usually I address it regularly, but sometimes neglect happens and I have to catch up. Simple as that.
