Along with the music

Earlier tonight, just after dinner I was sitting around reflecting on how this year was totally one of removing any obstacles that might prevent me from doing things that I really want to do. This year was going to be my year of “why not?!” And to some extent I’ve fulfilled that promise to myself. That’s why I’ve really been pursuing and enjoying improv, and took on the training required to complete not just one marathon, but two in a three week span. Hardcore, yes? Basically, both things started with some building blocks, eventually forming a solid foundation. From that point, I’ve been continually forming new goals to challenge myself and to bring myself further than I would have originally imagined. Sounds good, right?

Between those two activities, this post focuses on the improv side of things. I’m currently through the foundation building classes, and well into the first of a series of short form classes. Short form improv is all about games, and is what most people think of when I mention improv. Just this past Monday, the topic that was covered was totally out of my comfort zone. Heck, it’s so far out of my comfort zone, I didn’t even know it was something to think about. The topic was musical improv. Yeah, so layer the usual improv stuff with the act of doing it melodically to some accompaniment and you can imagine how tough it can get. Maaaaaaaan. I bungled a few things here and there that night, but I still had a great time. Hell, I can’t even complain about being a fish out of water because everyone there was just as terrified, you know? Coming out of the class, I mentioned to a few classmates that if there was a musical improv class I would go ahead and take advantage. I mean, it’s not that I was fantastic at it at all. And that’s why I want to take a class. Musical improv isn’t a common skill. If I ever want to take this activity to some other height, musical improv might distinguish me. That being said, it’s enjoyable enough for me to be doing it for the fun of it.

I said that I’d take it with the belief that such a class wouldn’t roll around for a long time, or that I’d have to switch theatres. I figured that it was something that I could keep in my back pocket. Well, the schedule for the November-December term at the theatre has come out, and wouldn’t you know it, a musical improv class was listed. I was already planning on taking the class which is next in the series of short form classes, but the musical class was unexpected. It took me a while to consider whether I wanted to take two classes a week, but eventually I decided to just go for it, in continuing with the “why not” theme. I have to wait for the response, so it’s possible the musical class is full already but who knows? We’ll see if I get a spot.
