The racing queue

This is something that I’ve been wanting to add to the blog for a long while now. I’ve just added a page called “Race History.” It’s a list of all races that I’ve participated in. Yes, after each race inevitably I’ve blogged about how the whole affair went. Thing is, there’s been no comprehensive list, so that’s what that page is for.

Even though I started running more than a year ago, each race is still a huge accomplishment. I treat each one as sort of a milestone or checkpoint that tells me how I’m doing. Having these races sort of provides me with something to strive for. Having a goal is a big part of training. Without that dangling carrot, there’s less incentive to push harder, know what I mean?

I don’t have enough races down to really be able to notice any marked differences (apart from the jump between race #1 and #2). Comparisons will be more and more available as I continue to participate in events.

And yes, I’ve got two events on the horizon. As I mentioned at the start of the half clinic, I have the HSBC Chilly Half Marathon to look forward to. It’s on March 1st. Prior to that is the annual Resolution Run on January 1st. Nope, no medals for this event, but in its place we get that really awesome looking jacket for free. That is an awesome deal for a 5K run.

I’m sure that I’ll be signing up for more events as time passes. I have my eyes set on the Sporting Life 10K down Yonge St., the Nissan 10-miler, A Midsummer Night’s Run, Mississauga Half, Scotiabank, Oasis Zoo Run among others. It remains to be seen just how many of these I’ll actually get off my duff to sign up for. I know next year is going to be extraordinarily busy for me with the new condo and other activities, but I’m going to make the effort to keep adding mileage to my running shoes.

From simple roots through high vision

I don’t know if this has been a long time brewing, but all of a sudden I’ve been hit with a sudden urge to change the name of this blog. I think it’s really starting to bug me that the name is just plain average. It didn’t start out that way. The name is what it is only because of it origin–and not because I thought “The Impact” is cool or interesting at all. According to my entries, the last time I changed the name was back in November 2007. At that point I cut the name back to “The Impact.” Prior to that, the name was “Hades Impact.” Where did that name come from? To be honest, the origin is obscure and makes me mildly sheepish when I explain it, so…I won’t (explicitly).

Anyway, I was really struggling to find something appropriate so I started asking around for opinions. In the end, a friend simply went for the obvious: “why not citizen of the planet?” See, I’ve had that as my MSN name since I’ve come back from Japan. It comes from a song by Alanis from her latest Flavors of Entanglement. I think it’s appropriate and sounds cool. So, that’s the name I’m going with for now. We’ll see how long it sticks. :)

Wonky themes

I’m trying to upgrade my theme, but I’m having a bit of trouble. So, please don’t mind the site if it looks a little wonky over the next little while. All is well.

Yarrr!

So it’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day. I would have let this go but work involved a lot of ARRRR’ing. I found a plugin that transforms posts into different writing styles. On ITLaPD it filters the whole blog into Pirate-speak. So, for the remainder of today you can have fun reading some of my old posts in Pirate. Also, this post will be permanently Pirated. That goes for comments as well. Give it a try.

Filling in the gaps

Ooh, I’ve been having trouble finding something to write about. There’s a lot I want to vent on, but it wouldn’t be right to do so here. In an ideal world I wouldn’t have to self-censor, and I would be able to write whatever I want with impunity. However, the world simply doesn’t work that way.

This blog is public; you never know who’s actually reading this thing. So while I do aim to make this blog honest where I can and a good reflection of what’s going on in my mind, reality dictates that I can’t just lay it all out, as much as I want to do so. This is especially true with whatever I write regarding my professional sphere.

Though I can’t say that I’ve been perfectly clean in terms of not doing much that will damage my reputation in my professional life, I don’t think I’ve written much that might have dire consequences. Though…perhaps I just have a bad memory. Anyway, see, I think this is interesting in that even though I may be holding some things back, I still consider all of this to be very genuine to who I am. It’s in seeing these other pieces of me that the reader can build a profile of who I am. From that profile, it’s pretty easy to fill in the gaps, yes?

IE strikes again

Just got word from a friend that IE wasn’t able to open the blog. I checked it out and sure enough he was right. Something about it not being able to open the site, which is a crock. After poking around it was determined that embedded videos were causing the problems in IE. So, I’ve just gone through my posts removing any embedded vids from YouTube and such. That really bites, doesn’t it? I mean, embedded vids were meant as a convenience to you, the reader, but what’s the point if you can’t even access the site, yeah?

Whatever. Go Firefox.

ETA: There seems to be a conflict between the Lightbox plugin and embedded videos. Given a choice between the two, I’ve decided to deactivate the Lightbox plugin, which is a shame, but that’s the way things go. What does that mean? Well, images that used to popup in this nice layer will now act like any other run of the mill image. I’ll try to find another plugin that’ll actually work with vids, but I’m in no hurry to find one.

Pruning in the name of vanity

I’ve been wondering what to do with that random image widget at the top-right area of my blog. A lot of the pics that were there were rather dated. I think there was one in there from when I went camping in 2003 which is pretty ancient. Whenever I see it I think about just how young I look in it and how it’s no longer all that representative, know what I mean?

Anyway, I’ve decided to take out some dated ones out of rotation. I’ve kept some from what must be 2002, if only because I don’t mind how I look in them. I’ve also added two new ones into the mix:

I was testing out my new camera and took that first one. Bet you can’t guess where I was situated when that was taken. Or maybe you can–it’s a likely spot. The second one was taken at Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto. I got caught in a rain storm and was soaking wet.

Man, it seems like so many of my pics are taken from that same angle. When I’m taking a self-photo it’s hard to change the angle unless I consciously make an effort to do so. Or maybe subconsciously I just know which side is my good side. Ha!

In any case, I should stay on top of adding new pics into the mix once in a while, yes?

Blogging privacy

Buried in the options for WordPress is a section regarding blog privacy. There’s only one section in it with two options: let the blog be visible to everyone including search engines, or block search engines while allowing regular visitors. I’d never really given it much thought ever since I moved to WP. It’s only when I upgraded to the new version of WP and was poking around the settings when it suddenly gave me pause. Do I really need to have my blog indexed by Google or other search engines?

My goal for the blog isn’t to have wide-exposure. Otherwise, I’d be pimping it out to as many services I can think of. Sure I’ve added my blog to a handful of groups (which are linked on the right bar), but I’ve at least attempted to participate to some extent in those communities with varying degrees of success. So, it’s not like I’ve joined just for hits, know what I mean? Though, it really is nice to get the occasional new reader from these avenues.

Thanks!

Most search engine hits that I receive are pretty off-the-wall from what I can tell. I’d get weird hits regarding cannibalism, yogurt, that damn Boleyn movie, etc. Almost none are from people seeking me out. I don’t think it’s particularly easy to link my real-life self to my blog, so for someone to come here for the purposes of finding me I’d either have to flat out tell them the URL or they’d find out from someone else. I kind of like it that way. Ultimately, when all is said and done, what I write is first and foremost for myself. So, should it really matter if I make take the blog off search engines or not?

I don’t know. I’ve switched that feature on and off a couple of times over the weekend out of boredom. In the end I suspect I’ll keep it public (for now). Knowing that the option is there though is interesting enough. This blogging thing isn’t going to get me fame and fortune, and to be honest, I really don’t care.
