To be safe again with you

Two videos. First one is a video of Robyn covering Hyperballad off of Björk’s album Post. Pretty cool build up.

Just found this one as well. Seems to be from the same awards ceremony. Ane Brun covering Jóga off of Björk’s album Homogenic. Ane has a haunting voice. Paired with the strings, this is an awesome cover.

Seven tidbits

OK, so I can’t claim the award because I’m not going to post this to seven other bloggers. Sorry, no dice. That being said, since it was requested and I don’t seem to mind, I’m going to post seven quick tidbits about myself.

  1. I am a Scorpio and the sign rising over the horizon at my birth was also Scorpio. So my inner and outer self have that characteristic. My moon was in Pisces meaning my emotional nature is Pisces-like (whatever that means). Yes, my vitals are all in water-signs. Would indicate that my emotions play a big role in my life. Very true.
  2. I have helped to organize and emcee orientation week at university. Time leading up to it was probably one of the hardest years of my life. The week itself was completely hellish. Those people that I’ve ushered in have since graduated.
  3. I’ve had three cars: an Oldsmobile Cutless Ciera, a Pontiac Sunfire, and a Toyota Corolla. They all had spoilers. I now can’t picture myself with a spoiler-less car. Such cars kind of look bare, don’t they?
  4. I have notoriously flat feet. I always used that as an excuse as to why I just wasn’t meant to run. Who knew that I’d be running half marathons?
  5. I bake relatively frequently. I often take pictures of what I made. I’m really not that bad of a baker. I’ve gotten good reviews for a lot of stuff that I’ve come up with.
  6. I’ve been to Japan twice. I’m pretty sure I won’t be heading back any time soon. That being said, I find the memorization of Kanji to be fascinating. I’d like to take on Mandarin Chinese as my next challenge.
  7. According to Last.fm, my music tastes tend to be: rock, indie, female vocalists, pop, alternative, Canadian artists. I really like quirky stuff, hence my propensity for Alanis and Björk.

I have lost my origin…

and I don’t want to find it again…

My music notes – November/December 2007

I realize I didn’t write about my CD purchases last month. I probably should have because now it will seem like I went a little overboard with this post.

My Recent CD Purchases (November and December):

  • Neverending White Lights – Act II: the blood and the life eternal
  • Alicia Keys – As I Am
  • Suzie McNeil – Broken & Beautiful
  • Peter Bjorn and John – Writer’s Block
  • Dragonette – Galore
  • Simian Mobile Disco – Attack Decay Sustain Release
  • The Killers – Sam’s Town
  • The White Stripes – Conquest – EP*
  • Jann Arden – Uncover Me ‘The B Sides’*
  • Björk – Declare Independence – EP*

* Digital Download
I was very surprised by Neverending White Lights. One their tracks was featured on iTunes as a free track a few weeks back. I enjoyed it enough to seek out the album. The CD is very much a cohesive whole. It’s ambient and emotional. The first time I listened to this CD, I was just lying in bed, and seriously I kind of felt like I was floating. I was impressed. I might just get Act I sometime. Ms. McNeil surprised me with her album as well. After hearing a few of her singles on the radio, I got her CD which I enjoyed. In her genre, it is easy to over-emote and create a chunk of cheese, but I enjoyed her emotional vocals. Dragonette is interesting. I don’t think I would have normally picked up an album like theirs, but their CD was less than $10, so I thought I’d give them a shot after hearing their one single on the radio. There are one or two tracks on there that are too close to Scissor Sisters for my liking. So…their tracks are in my library and get some rotation, but I don’t think I can sit through the whole thing again in one go without some extra patience. I kind of got annoyed by As I Am. I can’t put my finger on what it was…I probably should give the whole thing another listen from start to finish, but…do I want to?

I’ve only got one note on the EPs I downloaded. I was sorely left wanting from the Declare Independence EP. The tracks on it either gave me a headache or just didn’t have enough personality to warrant being a separate track, know what I mean? Compared to some of the brilliant tracks on the Earth Intruders Club Mixes and Innocence EPs, I was kind of disappointed.

Raise your flag…

Innocence roared

neurosis only
attaches itself to
fertile ground
where it can flourish

the thrill of fear
thought I’d never admit it
the thrill of fear
now greatly enjoyed with courage

Random thoughts on a hazy morning

Just some random stuff this morning.

For a short period a few weeks ago, that stairwell linking the drop-off area and the mezzanine was smelling clean (ETA: At Warden Station…). It was nice. Nowadays, it’s back to stinking of stale urine. How bad is it when not smelling urine is a rarity? Is that what the New York City subway is like?

The city has a weird vibe going on right now. There’s the TIFF going on. Yesterday, in the alleyway beside my building, a bunch of black cars were parked there. Spotlights were set up along the side, shining up the walls. The area was fenced off with a metal barrier. I figured that some sort of film-related get together would be occurring at the nightclub downstairs. It’s pretty interesting to be working in the so-called entertainment district. I sort of want to take the long way home one day and pass by the Chum Building at Queen & John–there’s bound to be something going on there, no? Then I’d go up to Yorkville to see if I could spot anyone just walking down the street. Thing is, I don’t think I care enough to take an hour walking detour. Maybe if I had company.

Also in town is Björk for the Virgin Festival down on the islands. Maaan. Why didn’t I get tickets? That show is going to be awesome. I guess I should really plan to see her next time she comes around (if she does). I want to see her live.

Edited to add the location of the odour: not at home or the office, thank GOD.
