The start of my collection

You know, all things considered I didn’t really get into collecting CDs and forming my music tastes as they are today until a few years ago. I mean, growing up I relied more on what I listened to on the Adult Contemporary station which doesn’t exactly aim for the young age bracket. Combined with my parents’ music tastes I became fairly acquainted with a fair amount of oldies. Good question: do you know any songs by Engelbert Humperdink? I do. Heh. Not sure what happened, but the first CD that I ever purchased was Alanis Morissette – Jagged Little Pill. It was getting good press, and I was familiar with Alanis and her work on You Can’t Do That on Television. Ooh, that was odd. I loved the CD, but it just didn’t feel right. What do I mean? Well, buying CDs is something “Jason” wouldn’t do.

I think my CD buying from that point was kept to a minimum. That’s not even a result of the whole Napster thing that happened early in the decade. I just didn’t have much interest in much. Now, sometime in what must have been 2002/2003, I saw the video for Bring Me to Life by Evanescence on TV. I think I was half napping when I was suddenly jolted by what felt like a mythical siren calling out to me. The video hooked me. I remember specifically going out to buy that CD. I played the heck out of that one as well. From that point forward, I was more likely to explore and buy CDs just to see what that music is like. It’s not entirely cost effective, I guess, but it helped me to define my tastes through trial and error. It’s probably why my collection is kind of eclectic.

Almost all of my CDs are ripped and on my computer for easy access. Why don’t I buy more CDs digitally? Frankly I just like having something physical. It’s probably anachronistic, but I just like things better that way. I might buy singles off iTunes for example, but if I like it enough I’m likely to get the full album. I’ll also lean on buying digitally if the stores overprice something. I like physical CDs but I’m no fool, you know?

Last day of magic

I haven’t really written about CDs for a while now. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t been collecting though. My CD collection is starting to really pick up in size. For the most part, I’m really enjoying discovering new sounds that I haven’t been introduced to before. Every now and then I find band that I really wish I’d heard about earlier. Right now, I’m really getting into The Kills. I don’t know how this happened, but seriously this duo has become one of my new favourite bands.

So how did this happen? Well, you know how iTunes has a free track every week from a band that probably deserves more publicity? A while ago they posted Cheap and Cheerful from their album Midnight Boom. I downloaded it, but to be honest I didn’t bother to give it a listen before adding it to my iPod. While I was in the car with my iPod on shuffle the song suddenly came on. As I was listening, I thought “man…that’s kind of catchy…in some weird Toni Basil sort of way.” I kind of liked the lo-fi feel to the track. That was enough for me to go to the record store and get Midnight Boom. My first listen through was kind of tough; first listens through records generally are. I mean, the case is that often the brain’s just trying to figure out how to classify the new sounds. So, I put the CD for a little while. A week or two later I ripped it and put it in my play list. I gave the full CD a few more listens and to my surprise I started to really like it. After a few more listens, I started to really think “holy fuck, this is great!” It’s like something just clicked, and I got it.

Midnight Boom doesn’t have a polished feel, and yet, it works. The grittiness adds to the character of it. It’s all indie-rock, lo-fi and quite fantastic. I was telling a friend that the album evokes some strong imagery for me. When I listen to it, I envision being in a small dank basement with fluorescent lighting. There are a few amps in the corner and the pair playing music hypnotically. There’s a mattress in another corner, with a pair on there doing lines of coke. There’s a black cat just walking over their drugged out bodies. Strange, no?

Anyway somehow these two manage to be effortlessly sexy without it being overt. I can’t understand it. In any case, I recommend having a listen. If you don’t get it the first time, give it a few more listens. Maybe you’ll get that same light bulb moment I had too.

My wife will enjoy The Hives

An exchange between the cashier at the record store and me:

“Buying for Christmas?”
– “Mm…you could say that. More for me, really.”
“Heh, yeah. I’m sure your wife will really enjoy The Hives
– ^_^;;;

Apparently I look like I’m married.

My eclectic list

I was just poking around my Last.fm account and noticed something interesting. For the longest time, the top 3 artists that got the most play on iTunes/iPod were Björk, Alanis Morissette, and Linkin Park. Over time, I’ve accumulated a lot of CDs, and as a result I’ve got a wider range of stuff scrobbled. And now? Somehow The White Stripes have passed Linkin Park to become my third-ranked artist–though not by much. I’m sure Linkin Park and The Whites Stripes will swap places a few times over the next little while. I kind of find all of that fascinating.

I’m not sure it’s really easy to characterize what I have in my music library. I remember a friend saying that I have an eclectic list. I agree. I could say that my library is mostly pop/rock/alternative with a heavier focus on the rock/alternative end of things. Oh, but it’s not that simple. I think I can even get more specific in some aspects (and give some examples).

  • Quirky artists (Björk, Portishead)
  • Lyricists (Alanis Morissette, K-OS)
  • Trashy fun electropop (Dragonette, CSS)
  • Retro (ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, Motown stuff)
  • Garage rock (The White Stripes, The Hives)
  • Angst and emo (Linkin Park, Three Days Grace)
  • Soundtracks (Kill Bill, Katamari Damacy)
  • Canadian Indie (Wintersleep, Die Mannequin)
  • Mainstream Soul (Jully Black, Alicia Keys)

To be honest, I don’t think there’s anything really tying it all together. You know what though? I’m fine with that. I like having a wide range of stuff because I’m often surprised by what comes up when I put my player into shuffle. It allows for some serendipitous moments whenever the tracks speak to the things going on in my life.

I’m going to add a Last.fm radio of my library to the right panel. The radio station is missing a lot of stuff from artists that they couldn’t get a licence from (or something or other) but still, it’s a bit of a cross-section.

More fun with pronoun switching

On the way home from my run, I started singing along to the various songs that popped up on my iPod. In doing so I’m able to pick out which songs I could possibly rock out on when I’m at a karaoke place with my friends.

Oh hell yeah, you better be on top of that kind of thing, you know?

At one point, If Tha Mood by Esthero came on, and I paused to think about the lyrics. They’re already pretty raunchy in the first place–I always knew that. However, it wasn’t until I switched pronouns around that I realized just how much more raunchy it becomes if it’s a guy singing it.

For example:

[He] won’t fuck you like I do
and yeah you know that it’s true
’cause I have what [he] hasn’t got
and I remembered all your spots so…

[He] won’t fuck you like I did
[He's] not into that wild shit and
I have what [he] hasn’t got…

The whole song becomes like a penis-measuring contest. It makes me laugh.

Man…too much idle time.

Retrofying the playlist

My playlist is going to go a little bit more retro. I mean, as much as I like having a lot of contemporary stuff on my iPod, it’s nice to hear some older stuff when I have it on shuffle. I think it kind of balances things out. I already have some Motown on there. I often find it a surprise when all of a sudden in the middle of the day I hear the first few bars of Edwin Starr singing War. It makes me think of Jackie Chan making funny faces while singing it. I have the Beatles’ 1 CD on there too. Man, their songs have really stood the test of time, haven’t they?

I think it’s time to add some more older stuff to the mix. A while back I bought the ABBA: Greatest Hits CD but lent it out to my mom. She’s had it in her car for the longest time. I’ve been meaning to get it back from her so that I could rip it and get it on my iPod. I think with the recent release of Mamma Mia and the sudden rise of ABBA tunes that I hear on the TV I’ve finally found enough push to do so. I also recently picked up the Fleetwood Mac: Greatest Hits CD as well. Mom has expressed interest in it, so I better rip it before lending it out. The only thing is that my 8GB nano is just about full. I have to decide what I’m willing to bump off of there so that I can put these and other CDs on. Lot of reorganizing to do tonight.

Balance is awesome: eclectic tastes are so much more interesting to observe. Got anything retro on your MP3 player that you’re not ashamed to admit to having?

My music notes – January/February/March 2008

I’ve been lazy with these music notes entries. As a result, the CDs have been piling up. Now that I’m about to list them, the list is looking a bit ridiculous.

My Recent CD Purchases:

  • Santana – Ultimate Santana
  • Lily Allen – Alright, Still
  • CSS – Cansei De Ser Sexy
  • OneRepublic – Dreaming Out Loud
  • Neverending White Lights – Act I: Goodbye Friends of the Heavenly Bodies
  • Lenny Kravitz – It Is Time for a Love Revolution
  • Feist – I Feel It All – EP
  • Wintersleep – Welcome to the Night Sky
  • k-os – Joyful Rebellion
  • The Hives – The Black and White Album
  • Die Mannequin – Unicorn Steak
  • Paramore – Riot!
  • Gorillaz – D-Sides
  • The Trews – No Time for Later

My notes:

I was surprised by Lily Allen’s CD. It’s a lot of cheeky fun. Same with CSS. So silly. “Lick lick lick my art tit! Suck suck suck my art hole!” Ha!

I think I prefer Act II in comparison to Act I for Neverending White Lights only because there’s a consistent feel to the whole thing.

OneRepublic’s CD was interesting. I think I prefer their original arrangement of Apologize to Timbaland’s remix because of the added drama. Although, both have their merits, right?

I enjoyed Wintersleep’s album, though I’m not sure why. All in all, maybe it’s just that it’s an easy listen all the way through.

I purchased Joyful Rebellion a long while ago, but didn’t add import it for the longest time because I didn’t really pick up on it the first time. I popped the CD in again recently and was surprised by how much my attitude changed toward it. I really like it now. Funny how that happens. Last time I wrote music notes, I said I wasn’t feeling the latest from Alicia Keys. Now, I’m starting to like it.

I enjoyed the Do It or Die track from Die Mannequin. From that I bought the whole album. I’m not sure I’m liking the whole thing though. I need to give it a few more listens. Same deal for The Trews. I kind of liked Hold Me In Your Arms but the whole album didn’t really sit with me.

What I like about Die Mannequin and Paramore is that they’re both fronted by strong female voices. The contrast against a hard rock background is really intriguing.

From Gorillaz D-Sides, the Schtung Chinese New Year Remix of Dirty Harry really sticks out. It’s strangely awesome.

I didn’t know what to expect from The Hives. I only heard of them from Timbaland’s Shock Value. That was enough to make me find out more. I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed their garage punk sound. As a whole, the CD is entirely a lot of fun to listen to.

My music notes – November/December 2007

I realize I didn’t write about my CD purchases last month. I probably should have because now it will seem like I went a little overboard with this post.

My Recent CD Purchases (November and December):

  • Neverending White Lights – Act II: the blood and the life eternal
  • Alicia Keys – As I Am
  • Suzie McNeil – Broken & Beautiful
  • Peter Bjorn and John – Writer’s Block
  • Dragonette – Galore
  • Simian Mobile Disco – Attack Decay Sustain Release
  • The Killers – Sam’s Town
  • The White Stripes – Conquest – EP*
  • Jann Arden – Uncover Me ‘The B Sides’*
  • Björk – Declare Independence – EP*

* Digital Download
I was very surprised by Neverending White Lights. One their tracks was featured on iTunes as a free track a few weeks back. I enjoyed it enough to seek out the album. The CD is very much a cohesive whole. It’s ambient and emotional. The first time I listened to this CD, I was just lying in bed, and seriously I kind of felt like I was floating. I was impressed. I might just get Act I sometime. Ms. McNeil surprised me with her album as well. After hearing a few of her singles on the radio, I got her CD which I enjoyed. In her genre, it is easy to over-emote and create a chunk of cheese, but I enjoyed her emotional vocals. Dragonette is interesting. I don’t think I would have normally picked up an album like theirs, but their CD was less than $10, so I thought I’d give them a shot after hearing their one single on the radio. There are one or two tracks on there that are too close to Scissor Sisters for my liking. So…their tracks are in my library and get some rotation, but I don’t think I can sit through the whole thing again in one go without some extra patience. I kind of got annoyed by As I Am. I can’t put my finger on what it was…I probably should give the whole thing another listen from start to finish, but…do I want to?

I’ve only got one note on the EPs I downloaded. I was sorely left wanting from the Declare Independence EP. The tracks on it either gave me a headache or just didn’t have enough personality to warrant being a separate track, know what I mean? Compared to some of the brilliant tracks on the Earth Intruders Club Mixes and Innocence EPs, I was kind of disappointed.
