My music notes – October 2007

Recent CD Purchases:

  • Matchbox Twenty – Exile On Mainstream
  • KT Tunstall – Drastic Fantastic
  • Nelly Furtado – Whoa, Nelly!
  • The White Stripes – White Blood Cells
  • The Arcade Fire – Neon Bible

After last month’s light spending on CDs, I kind of splurged at the beginning of this month but haven’t purchased anything since then (save for some occasional digital singles). I guess I was catching up on some CDs I should have gotten a while ago, like Whoa, Nelly! and White Blood Cells. Also wanted to get some new stuff like The Arcade Fire. So far, I like their style.

Mmm..can’t think of much that I’m interested in over the next month, but I might be surprised. Who knows?

My music notes – September 2007

Recent CD Purchases:

  • Bedouin Soundclash – Street Gospels
  • Jully Black – Seven Day Fool (Remix Bundle) – EP*
  • Gwen Stefani – Love. Angel. Music. Baby (The Remixes) – EP*

*Digital Download

It’s been a light month for music purchases. I’d like to say that it’s because I’ve been in a saving mood, but that certainly doesn’t explain why I splurged on a DS Lite. I haven’t even gotten around to popping the Bedouin Soundclash CD in my laptop; I’ve been too busy to sit down and give the album proper attention. Soon though.

My music notes – August 2007

Some interesting purchased singles:

  • Further Seems Forever – Pagan Poetry
I was just browsing around to see if anyone has done any Björk covers and found this track. Using an electric guitar instrumentation gives the track a totally different feel–I’d say this version is quite unsettling (even more so than the original). Even so, it’s a faithful cover, and I don’t mind feeling displaced for a few minutes.
  • Télépopmusik – Breathe
Mellow. Ambient. Makes me want to buy a Tridel condo.

Recent CD Purchases:

  • Queen – Greatest Hits
  • City and Colour – Sometimes
  • Nickelback – All the Right Reasons
  • Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the Deaf
  • Justin Timberlake – Futuresex/Lovesounds
  • Feist – Open Season (Remixes and Collabs)
  • Björk – Innocence – EP

I think about mid-month I felt the urge to head to the malls to just consume. When I stopped by HMV, I found a lot of CD that I wanted on sale. Pretty bad for my wallet despite the discount. Feh.

My music notes – July 2007

Some interesting purchased singles:

  • Nostalgia 77 – 7 Nation Army
It’s a White Stripes cover. Sounds great–though maybe a little overwrought at times. It’s nice to hear the different interpretation.
  • Sophie Milman – Something In the Air Between Us
iTunes had this as their free single a week or two ago. Smooth like velvet. Makes me want to find out more about this artist.
  • Nowhere With You – Joel Plaskett Emergency
I suppose I should have mentioned this one when I was talking about the Zellers tunes, but hey, better late…

Recent CD Purchases:

  • White Stripes – Icky Thump
  • Rihanna – Good Girl Gone Bad
  • Daughtry – Daughtry
  • Chris Cornell – Carry On
  • K-OS – Live Session – EP

Icky Thump is getting a lot of spins in my car.

Since the last time I bought CDs at the end of June, I’ve dropped by HMV and Best Buy a few times, but as I stared at the CD racks, nothing much else was really calling me to make a purchase. Maybe next month…

My music notes – June 2007

I’ve been meaning to write this one for a while–I’ve just been too busy to get my thoughts together.

So, over the past month or so, some song recommendations came in. I think in my last music notes entry I stated that I wasn’t going to review any tracks. That will still hold, but I think some commentary is warranted here and there.

Tracks suggested to me:

  • Portishead – Glory Box
  • Rihanna – Umbrella
Yeah, I know. It’s pretty mainstream, no? Still…the hook grabbed me by the nads. The Hippie has been telling me to get her CD. I might. *TCH* Don’t hold it against me.
  • The White Stripes – Icky Thump
I plan on getting their CD. I just haven’t gone out to fetch it yet.

Tracks suggested by me:

I wasn’t entirely anticipating doing a themed selection, but I think this set is worth mentioning. I mentioned a little while ago about that Esthero song playing during a Zellers commercial. I still smile when I see it. So, here’s a small list of songs played in Zellers commercials that I have on my playlist. It’s by no means exhaustive in terms of songs they’ve used (obviously).

  • Esthero – Every Day is a Holiday
  • The Marble Index – All That I Know
  • No Affiliation – Nice Day
  • Bedouin Soundclash – When the Night Feels My Song

Recent CD Purchases:

  • Chantal Kreviazuk – Ghost Stories
  • Gorillaz – Gorillaz
  • Amy Winehouse – Back To Black
  • Timbaland – Presents: Shock Value
  • Portishead – Dummy

Look ma! No mention of Björk!

Comments? Suggestions? Leave me a comment.

My music notes – May 2007

The Hippie and I were chatting the other day. She has been suggesting some tracks for me to put on my iPod and suggested that I write down the suggestions on the blog. Sounds good. Maybe I’ll try to do this (kinda) monthly. I’m not going to review the tracks, but I’d like to think that it’s interesting to see what’s going on on my player.

(OK, pardon the Björk. Sorry, her new CD just came out and it’s in the front of my mind)

Tracks suggested to me:

  • Johnny Cash – Hurt
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps
  • Timbaland feat. One Republic – Apologize
  • The Shins – Phantom Limb

Tracks suggested by me:

  • Obadiah Parker – Hey Ya
  • Björk – Innocence
  • Peter Bjorn and John – Young Folks
  • Brazilian Girls – Don’t Stop

Recent CD Purchases:

  • Feist – Let It Die
  • Feist – The Reminder
  • Björk – Volta

So hey, if anyone has any suggestions, I would like to hear them. I’m looking to diversify my library and what’s on my player.

CD splurge

Perhaps unintentionally, I’ve purchased a good number of CDs in the past month or two. I like buying physical CDs mostly because they look great on the shelf. As well, having them means not having to go to the trouble of burning just when I want to hear something in the car. Some of the purchases were attempts to try something new. Some were bought after hearing a few good singles. Some were bought to catch up on CDs that I should have gotten long ago. Some…were purely impulse.

Here’s the list. It makes me wonder what it says about my personal tastes.

  • African Guitar Summit
  • The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers
  • Three Days Grace – One X
  • Alexisonfire – Crisis
  • k-os – Atlantis: Hymns For Disco
  • The Killers – Hot Fuss
  • Scissor Sisters – Ta-Dah
  • Mobile – Tomorrow Starts Today
  • U2 – 18 Singles
  • Finger Eleven – Them vs. You vs. Me
  • Jann Arden – Uncover Me

Jesus, man. This money could be going to the condo fund. :?

Upcoming CD release dates

Just some notes to myself here.

Two CD release dates that I’m keeping an eye on:

May 7: Björk – Volta
This one appears to be a hip-hop album. I’m generally not one to go rushing out for a hip-hop album, but for her I’m willing to make an exception.

(ETA: OK…so not hip-hop. I should have known better. Heh)

May 14?/15: Linkin Park – Minutes to Midnight
Eh, what can I say? It’s been a long time coming. Their sound is unique, but they risk producing something that we might have heard before on their previous two studio albums. We’ll see soon enough.
