Envisioning spaces

There is so much activity going on at the construction site. They’ve been really busy haven’t they? The framing for the top, fourth floor is up. When I was driving by, I lucked out and had to stop at a stoplight by the building. I took the time to just turn my head and gawk. With the framing up I was actually able to make out which unit was mine. Seeing my place-to-be made me smile for an unreasonably long amount of time–long after the light turned green and I was forced to drive on away.

The countdown is now at about 5.5 months. Time is just passing by so quickly! Soon winter will come and pass and we’ll be into spring, which really holds potential for having fantastic moving weather. The mind races at possibilities. I’m still processing ideas for how I want to decorate. Last time I mentioned that in this blog I suggested that I was leaning toward an autumn palette. My mind is now starting to lean toward having a green accent wall to evoke more of a nature-feel tying the dark hardwood floor and other white walls. I still kind of want a sectional, but I’d be all right with a simpler couch. The colour should be kind of light/neutral so that it’d be easy enough to match a few cushions with the accent wall tying it all together.

I know it’s still too early. Doesn’t hurt to dream.

A meditation on construction season

Ooh, I know it’s unfortunate that there’s construction up ahead closing the road to one lane. No really, I know, everyone just wants to get home.

Sure! It’s OK. Please move up ahead of me. I’m going to let you in just because I’m in that sort of mood.

All right. I know y’all wanna get home too. Getting out of this lane, racing ahead in the lane that’s cut off and attempting to merge back is sure going to get you home faster. Those few seconds could mean the difference between a slice of steaming meatloaf versus a merely warm slice!

Oh, OK. Go on ahead and enter my lane. Heck, you’ve already kind of inserted yourself ahead and cut me off just inches from my bumper. You might as well complete the job.

I know you’re all very thankful to have saved a few seconds. It shows! In my good mood, I feel I should return such politeness. It is only proper then that declare to each and every one of you:

YOU’RE WELCOME, BITCHES.

The auspicious crane

Over at the building site, now that Phase 1 construction is drawing to a close, I’m seeing more and more resources being diverted over to Phase 2 stuff, which is pretty darn exciting for me. This evening as I walked over back to my car I saw a big crane looming over the space where my condo will be. I think they’re going to start laying the foundation and underground bits over the next few weeks. It’ll be amazing to see the building go up piece by piece, day after day. However, it won’t be until I see my floor really taking shape that I’ll really start to feel all tingly. That’ll still be months away, for sure, but knowing that it’s really going to start becoming a reality instead of just some vague ideas and blueprints is still kind of exciting.

Just a little over 11 months to go! It’ll fly by in no time.

Pushed back a few months

A few days ago someone came to the door to try to deliver a registered letter. Unfortunately no one was here to answer the door so a notice was left behind for us to pick it up at the post office. Thing was, the postal carrier didn’t write on the notice just who the letter was for. So it sort of just sat around until my father called the post office and found out that the letter was actually for me. Eh? I wasn’t expected any registered mail, so I was intrigued. It’s only today that I had the chance to go pick it up.

Bad news.

It’s a letter from the builder of my condo. It says that due to circumstances “out of [their] control” the tentative date would have to be pushed back. It’s being adjusted up to April 8 of next year. When I read the letter I was pretty disappointed. I fell into one of those silent contemplative modes. Luckily, I was already alone and didn’t have to deal with anyone. I drove home stunned, but kept it all in perspective.

First of all, I already expected that this might happen. Apparently I’m not the luckiest man in the world. Ha! By pushing it by four months, at the very least it will give me more time to accumulate more resources. Precious resources! I need to save for the upgrades, furniture, and see if I can produce a bigger down payment. That all would have been a tall order if it was left to just a time limit of 9 months. With 13 months…it’s a bit more tolerable.

Over the past few months, I’ve been watching the Phase 1 houses go up in the area, and I’ve been cheering for them because really once their done then most of the focus will be turned to my building. I guess it really doesn’t matter too much at the moment any more.

So, it is just with a little bit of sadness that I am resetting my countdown clock. That’s life. :-?

Big mounds of dirt

When I came back from lunch, I checked my cell phone and found out I missed a call. I checked my voice mail and got a message from the interior design people for the company that’s building my condo. I was kind of floored. I mean, the construction site is still a bunch of big mounds of dirt. I use the parking lot next to the site almost daily, so I get to indirectly monitor the progress. Really, I’m not exaggerating about the fact that it’s a big mound of dirt: there’s a mountain of gravel all fenced in. I see heavy machinery working all around the area and men in hard hats going about their business. I guess they’re just putting in the underground infrastructure first.

So, yeah, considering the lack of progress on-site, I was surprised that there’s already talk of interior design. Well, actually, there none really yet. The voice mail said she’d contact me again once she got pricing for my suite. Exciting, eh? I’m already starting to think about colour palettes and furniture. I should take a look at some home mags for ideas.

Fifteen months to go before the tentative date. Maybe I’ll add a countdown widget to the blog to remind myself.
