First Ikea experience

Maybe it’ll surprise you, but up until today I had never stepped foot inside an Ikea. With the idea of picking up a coffee table in mind, my mother (who had come to visit to help get my place organized) and I ventured over to the North York location to have a peek around. I had no idea what to expect. As we approached the place, the building looked enormous. Immediately, I kind of felt dwarfed by the scale of it. I parked on the upper deck and we ventured down to the front entrance. As I walked to the front I couldn’t help but notice just how crowded the place was on a Saturday afternoon. I have never seen a furniture place that packed, you know? I passed a lot of families with their little kids in tow. I swear, you’d think they we were all heading into an amusement park. Maybe I was imagining it, but there was some palpable excitement among the kiddies. On my first step in, the fact that I saw kids playing in a ball pit made me laugh out loud. Yup, the magic happens inside.

So my mother and I were wandering around the showroom, kind of ooh-ing and aah-ing at some of the merchandise. Sure, there are some items there that kind of look inexpensive, but if you pick the right item you’ll get that whole clean-line modern thing without much fuss. Now, yesterday I said I was eyeing the Ramvik or the Klubbo coffee tables. When I finally got to see it for myself, I realized that the Klubbo was far too low to the ground for my liking, and the Ramvik was just way too chunky. Even the fact that the Ramvik had storage was not enough to make me want it. However, then I saw a black-brown version of the Expedit coffee table. It was thick, sufficiently chunky, and looked sturdy. The glass on top gave it a bit more character. At that point I knew that if I were to get a table, that would be the one. So, I pencilled it onto my Ikea sheet. It just so happened that beside the coffee table they had the corresponding side table. I figured that if I got the coffee table it would probably be a good idea to just get the side table as well. At $60, why not? I pencilled that in, too. I wasn’t intending on getting a bookcase either, but when I saw the 4×2 bookcase and noticed that it was also Expedit, I just decided to pencil it in as well. I don’t know if I intended to actually buy all of that from the get go, but I figured that writing down what I wanted wouldn’t hurt.

Well, my mother and I wound our way through the store. We tried to minimize the impulse stuff as much as we could, though I did end up getting an Ã…rstid floor lamp as well. We eventually got to that self-pick up area with the flat-pack boxes. Right by the entrance was the bookcase. Sweet mercy, that thing was freaking heavy. I was already wondering how the heck we were going to bring it home. As we went around, the boxes piled up. The cart was heavily loaded. Every time there was a slight slope, the cart really started rolling out of my control. That’s how heavy everything was. All in all, I ended up paying $365 for the day, which, in my mind, seemed obscenely cheap for all the stuff I got.

When we got back to my car, my mother and I sort of had to play Ikea Tetris just to get all of the items to fit into my car. She had all of her training lifting heavy patients at the hospital. Even though I knew that, I was still quite impressed with her ability to lift things to get them in. That bookcase package wasn’t light at all. I’m also impressed with the Corolla. I knew that it was good at holding cargo because of the fact that I was able to stuff all of my boxes in there during my move. Still, the fact that I got all of the furniture in there just amazed me. I really did a lot of heavy lifting today. Moving has that effect, no? Part of me wishes that this process is on-going because this necessary weight lifting must be doing something good for me (or so I’d like to think).

So, it’s late on a Saturday now. All of the furniture is assembled and I swear, my living room is now looking like a proper living room. Yes, there’s more stuff, but no, it’s not cramped. Everything goes well together, and that makes me happy. Very soon, I’m going to start work on softening up the room. I’m a little afraid that all of the pieces together might be a little overwhelming. Maybe adding cushions and other textures to the couch will help. We’ll see.

Yup. It’s been yet another productive weekend.

So much trouble for a coffee table

In terms of interior decoration, one common message that just about everyone has been telling me is that I should be in no hurry to fill my place. I really need to take the time to pick out pieces and personal touches that I truly want to represent what I’m all about. I agree with that notion. I don’t think I’ll get around to putting more personal touches in my place until I have everything else put away. In my living room I still have a couple of boxes of stuff lying around. I would have emptied them by now but there simply isn’t any place to put the stuff. So there they sit, making my habitation of this space look more transitional than anything else. That’s OK. I’ll know I’ll eventually get things put away.

The next thing that I’ve really been stressing out about as of late has been the addition of a coffee table. I mean, last weekend I picked out a nice rug. Since then I’ve been trying to figure out what would go with the couch and rug. I have some ideas. In truth though, I’ve really been focusing my attention on the stuff at Ikea. Why? Well, I figure that it’s easy enough to pick something out from that place and then take it home for quick assembly. In other furniture stores I’d have to stick around the place for delivery, and given the state of work over the next week or two that’s time that I just can’t give up. The few options that I’ve really been throwing around have been the Ramvik table or the Klubbo table. Why? Both have the whole clean line thing going on which I think would fit well with the couch.

I am going to use this time to apologize to my friends for the past few days. I’ve really been bouncing ideas off of so many people. There have been a variety of opinions, but in the end all have been valuable in helping me figure out what I want. Thing is, I still don’t know what I want! Yes, I’m going to give it a bit more time, but I should settle sooner rather than later. The reason for that is that if I drag it on for much longer I’m going to go absolutely insane.

Connections and handy work

I really am fortunate to have friends that are willing to help me out with my housing stuff. Today I had two come over. I guess their visit was two-fold. First of all, they wanted to have a look at my new digs. Secondly, they agreed to help me install some of my appliances. In particular, my fridge wasn’t hooked up to the water line, the washer/dryer unit wasn’t connected to the pipes/vents, and the dishwasher wasn’t connected in any way. Well, when everyone arrived we started examining all of the appropriate instruction manuals, and making a list of all of the parts we needed. Once we had all of that we went to Lowe’s.

Picking stuff up there was interesting. I mean, as soon as we started searching we came to the realization that I had forgotten to take measurements for anything that I needed. For the dryer vents, I knew that I needed 4″ tubes, but I didn’t know how much of it I needed. I just picked up a few parts hoping that I had my bases covered. For the refrigerator, we weren’t sure where to look so we ended up pressing one of the store’s advertised “help buttons.” Yeah, I was kind of shy to hit the button, but really, that’s what they’re there for, right? I asked the guy that arrived for a compression nut and sleeve. He pointed me to the right spot but asked me what the size of the tubing was. Once again, I was totally clueless. My friend were all over that though and pointed me to the 1/4″ components.

Once I got all of those parts I started wandering around seeing if there was anything that I needed. I eventually found myself among the area rugs. I honestly had no intention on buying a rug. I really just wanted to see what was available. At some point though, I spotted a rug that seemed to really gel well with the square motif thing that I have going in my place. After some consideration I decided that I might as well get the rug right away; there was no point putting it off. So yeah, I ended up buying the thing. I’m so bad that way–it’s not uncommon for me to go in with one thing in mind and come out with a lot extra.

Anyway, once we got back we got to work on the fridge. We started following all of the instructions in the book. Yes, we eventually got it in working condition, but not before a leak or two, and having to figure out where the valve was for the copper pipe. Yes, when I realized that we had put it all together and that nothing was leaking I let out a good cheer. Yes! As for the washer/dryer, we started putting all of the vent gear together. Unfortunately, what I though was enough turned out to be quite short; we had to go out to get more parts. Once we had it all connected I tried turning on the pipes and kind of freaked out when water started spraying all over. The only issue, really, was that the connections weren’t tight enough.

After installing the two, we started looking at what was needed for the dishwasher. After realizing that we needed to do some electrical work, I thought that doing it ourselves would be too dangerous. Oh well–two of three isn’t bad, right?

When I unrolled the rug and put it in place, I knew that I had made the right decision. Adding a bit of rug texture to the room really makes my place feel more like home. Before it was just cold and hard. Now there’s a perceived feeling of warmth and softness. It’s really great.

So, pictures below are the area rug and the fridge water dispenser. This was a great productive day. Even if things go wrong tomorrow, I will be happy because so much was done today.

Meeting again with the design consultant

I had an appointment with the builder’s design consultant this morning. Apparently the company that was originally going to supply the cabinetry for all the condo units went under, meaning that I had to come in to see and approve the substitutions. I parked at the station lot and made the short walk over to the office. As I walked by my future building I noticed that my unit had the windows and patio doors installed. Wow, man. That means that my unit is now enclosed and somewhat shielded from the weather. That’s really good news because with the cold weather encroaching upon us I don’t want any delays due to construction people not being able to do anything useful in the skin-numbing winds. That’s pretty much what the consultant told me: they wanted to get the shell up as soon as possible so that they could continue working through winter. Makes sense.

Next to the condo building, work is already well under way on a new recreation centre. I really appreciate the fact that there’ll be such a place just a few steps away from where I’ll be. There’s been talk that the factory north of the community will be torn down and replaced with commercial developments including a bank and maybe a grocery store. God, there’s so much going on around this place that it’s almost unbelievable, you know? I’m completely looking forward to seeing just how transformed this area will be in two years. Right now it’s a tad bleak, but the potential is all there.

Anyway, the appointment was really quick and painless. The original cabinets were labelled as having the stain colour “espresso” but who are they kidding? The colour was basically black. This new cabinet stain colour by the new company is also labelled “espresso” but isn’t black. Instead, it’s a dark brown that’s somewhat warmer than the previous ones. I think this is a great substitution because dark brown is simply more visually interesting. For these cabinets, I was given a choice among a wide selection of handles. For the old cabinets, there was no choice–either I took the ugly handles that they had or just specified them not to put the handles on at all. I opted to not have the handles installed because the specified ones were just damn ugly. In its place, I was planning on just getting these long, chunky metallic ones. I had the image in mind and was determined to have it look right. Well, among the selection of handles for the new cabinets was basically the type of handle I was thinking of. Sure, the sample was smaller than I had imagined, but it had the same aesthetic. And it was free! So yeah, that was one less thing I had on my mind.

One of the upgrades that I signed for was to switch the electrical switches from the skinny ones to the fat Decora switches. For whatever reason, that option suddenly became standard, meaning that the several hundred I paid for that option was going to be refunded to me. That extra $500+ was already basically a sunk cost in my mind so I asked if there was anything else I could throw the money toward. I ended up asking for a cold water line for my fridge. Even with that added though it seems that the builder will still end up refunding me some cash. Really, I have to ask, how the heck did that happen? In effect, I’ve added another option, and they still owe me. Ha!

There are only four months and a bit left before I can move in. I am ridiculously excited!

Envisioning spaces

There is so much activity going on at the construction site. They’ve been really busy haven’t they? The framing for the top, fourth floor is up. When I was driving by, I lucked out and had to stop at a stoplight by the building. I took the time to just turn my head and gawk. With the framing up I was actually able to make out which unit was mine. Seeing my place-to-be made me smile for an unreasonably long amount of time–long after the light turned green and I was forced to drive on away.

The countdown is now at about 5.5 months. Time is just passing by so quickly! Soon winter will come and pass and we’ll be into spring, which really holds potential for having fantastic moving weather. The mind races at possibilities. I’m still processing ideas for how I want to decorate. Last time I mentioned that in this blog I suggested that I was leaning toward an autumn palette. My mind is now starting to lean toward having a green accent wall to evoke more of a nature-feel tying the dark hardwood floor and other white walls. I still kind of want a sectional, but I’d be all right with a simpler couch. The colour should be kind of light/neutral so that it’d be easy enough to match a few cushions with the accent wall tying it all together.

I know it’s still too early. Doesn’t hurt to dream.

House projects

After my run this morning, I headed to the kitchen to grab something to eat. My father was there washing dishes. As I poured a bowl of cereal, he started talking about various projects that he wanted to do around the house. The first he mentioned was removing this dwarf spruce out that he planted in front of the house. Due to its positioning close to the driveway and the numerous winter months since it was planted its slowly turned browner and browner. See, the poor tree often gets buried in the snow when we clear the driveway. And, without exposure to sunlight the tree has slowly died. My mother and I have been telling him how ugly it’s gotten and that it should be cut down. All this time he’s been against cutting it down for various reasons.

Him: “The brown is only temporary! It’ll get greener come spring.”

Me: “Dad…it’s called an evergreen for a reason.”

Ugh. So, I don’t know why he’s suddenly had a change of heart, but frankly I’m glad: the thing is really fug right now. He also mentioned something about adding panelling or moulding to a wall in the sitting area. The thought of a DIY project like that made me shudder, and I let him know by voicing my displeasure. He got into his usual defensive mode and started telling me “why are you stopping me from doing these projects?”

Gross gross gross.

I didn’t want to get into one of those arguments because they really turn ugly pretty fast. So, I just said “I don’t care anymore. Do what you want.” Seriously. I was tired of caring. I would have been content to leave it at that, but he added on “You have your own condo now. Don’t interfere.”

UGH. I’m still living in this damn house for a year. Alright though. I don’t want to deal with that anymore. If he wants to make the house look like shit, that’s his business. Seriously.

Final upgrades

Bloody hell. I just wrote a couple of paragraphs about my day and the damn browser crashed on me. Ugh. Well here we go again.

Whoo, I’ve had a full morning. Today I had another appointment at the design centre to finalize all of the selections the consultant and I had drafted out during my previous visit. In the end, I did decide to go with my full wish list–so yeah: that’s one big chunk of change. Throughout the process I was letting out big sighs of disbelief. I mean, the whole thing was like this weird dream where I’m signing away large amounts of cash. It felt totally unreal. I mean, how often do you get to do that, right?

The lead up to this morning has been mildly rough. I’ve been really apprehensive about the whole thing because I’ve been worrying about where I’m going to get the funding to do everything that I want to do for my place. When it comes to monetary things, often I worry a great deal. In the end, things usually work themselves out due to paying close attention to flow or other circumstances, and I end up having worried for nothing. It just turned out that this morning’s meeting was just another case where circumstance was on my side.

OK, so here’s some background. I have to pay 15% of the purchase price as a deposit for my place. I’ve already paid off a large sum of that, but not the full percentage yet. I have to come up with the balance of that cash (which is a couple thousand) by my possession date next April. Secondly, since I’m trying to finance my upgrades, I only have to pay off 35% of the total cost of the upgrades as a down payment. That can be spread out, but it’s still a hefty bill. So you see, that’s why I was concerned. I mean, I was worrying about where I’d come up with the cash to take care of both. So this morning is where the magic happened.

As I signed away on pages and pages of forms, the design consultant told me that the down payment for the upgrades would count toward the 15% balance. What in the world?! She punched in the numbers into a document, and after deducting the upgrade cost, the remaining balance due next year turned out to be just a few hundred. She wasn’t sure that the numbers were right, so we calculated it all out together, and indeed, it was correct. Oh, but since it was just a few hundred, I told her that I could write another cheque for that balance and throw it toward a larger down for the upgrades. So I did that, and when she punched in the numbers into the document, the balance listed was $0.

$0.

What in the world??? Effectively then, I don’t have to pay any more come next April. Again, we were both questioning the numbers, but yeah, they worked out. That is absolutely insane. It frees up funds for other uses! It’s certainly one less thing for me to be stressing out about. Craaazy! I may have had doubts before, but seriously, I can do this! I’ll be honest and say that I really feel blessed that something this important has a bit of resolution, know what I mean?

And so, today was a good day.

Showroom glam

I took time today to head up to Vaughan today to check out the suggested big appliance showroom located there. Yeah, even though possession is still on April of next year I was told to go there and get measurements for the stove that I want. See, I’m planning on upgrading to a slide-in range, and for that to be accepted they need the measurements when I finalize the upgrades so that they know how much to cut from the counter top. To me, it seems ever so slightly ridiculous because I won’t be sure whether the model I want now will still be available or have the same dimensions when it actually comes time to buy the darn thing. Now, I’m not even required to buy anything at the moment, so really this trip was for exploratory purposes.

Anyway, I was sort of in awe of everything in the showroom. So many choices! I went in with stainless steel appliances in mind. See, the condo comes with five appliances. They’re plain white and pretty basic. I sort of want to go the stainless steel route just for the sake of making it all look rich, you know? It also increases resale value when it comes time for all of that. By going to that showroom place, I’m getting decent credit for those white appliances if I upgrade them.

All in all, I don’t think I need to touch the washer/dryer since that part is pretty tucked away anyway, right? So that leaves the fridge, stove, and dishwasher. For stainless steel, I wasn’t expecting to really go far over $2500. Hoooly crap was I wrong. I think I was seduced by all of the showroom glam. I sort of gravitated over to the Kitchen-Aid appliances which…yeeeah. They’re expensive, and yet, so very very nice.

*SIGH*

I can’t directly afford it all right now…but I will be able in the future when I actually need to buy the darn things. So, I’m not entirely scared of drowning yet. However, man, it’s just adding yet another thing to the pile of expenses that I need to consider for this whole thing.
